Cobar is a mining town situated in central western New South Wales edging on to the Outback. Cobar retains majority of its late 19-century architecture giving Cobar it is charm and character. Cobar shares indigenous culture at Mount Grenfell through Aboriginal rock paintings, which are some of largest and most important in Australia. The name Cobar is derived from the Aboriginal Ngiyampaa word for copper, Kuparr, Gubarr or Cuburra, meaning ‘red earth’ or ‘burnt earth’ used in making body paint for Cooroborees.
Cobar was built on and boasts prosperity from copper, lead, silver, zinc, gold and pastoral industries spanning back to 1870, along with other local historical attractions such as the claim to the longest iron lace verandah in NSW, big Tooheys Can, the local post office, heritage centre and more. The Cobar environment can be harsh ranging from late 40s early 50s in summer to as low as -2 degrees Celsius in winter. Cobar has seen its fair share of drought and great rainfall showing off the beautiful native flora and fauna of the Cobar Shire.
Cobar is a great, very laid back, easy going and friendly little community that reaches out to help and support each other whenever we can. It is easy to fall in love with and make your home.
