What is an emergency repair?
An emergency repair is one that makes your home unsafe, insecure, or uninhabitable. Under the Residential Tenancies Act 2010 (NSW), you have the right to arrange emergency repairs if you cannot contact us after hours.
Emergency repairs include:
- Burst water pipe or serious water leak
- Total failure of electricity, gas, or water supply to the property
- Gas leak — evacuate immediately and call 000, then your gas provider
- Dangerous electrical fault
- Failure of essential appliance: hot water service, stove, or heating in cold weather
- Storm, flood, or fire damage affecting the roof or walls
- Blocked or broken toilet (where this is the only toilet at the property)
- Broken door lock, window lock, or other security breach
What to do in an emergency
- Step 1: If there is immediate danger to life — call 000 first.
- Step 2: Burst water pipe — turn off water at the main stopcock (usually near the water meter at the front of the property).
- Step 3: Gas leak — do not use any electrical switches or open flames. Evacuate the property immediately. Call the emergency plumbing & gas trades listed below. Call Jemena Gas on 132 909.
- Step 4: Contact our after-hours emergency line: 02 6881 8333
- Step 5: If you cannot reach us and the repair cannot wait, contact one of our approved emergency tradespeople listed below.
- Step 6: Keep all receipts. You may be entitled to reimbursement of reasonable emergency repair costs up to $1,000 under the Residential Tenancies Act 2010 (NSW). Send receipts to randm@wpre.com.au within 7 days.
